Blankets make you feel warm and comfortable during cold times. Imagine how some of us felt during cold times such as Hurricane Harvey or Katrina, when people covered us with blankets of love and kindness. Why does a pandemic season seem to make some people less caring than in a hurricane season? We can’t rely on people covering us with warm blankets of love and kindness but we can rely on The Holy Spirit to be our eternal Comforter ( No more blankets, Just the Comforter) regardless of the conditions!
This wonderful person, the Holy Spirit, was sent into the world by Jesus to be our Comforter and Guide. He was also sent to convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgement. God loves us so much that He sent His precious Son, Jesus, to save us from the devil’s work! Jesus overcame the devil after He was crucified on the cross, rose from the dead on the third day, and went back to God, the Father. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to Comfort us until He comes back again as judge. Regardless of what is happening in the world, we will be comforted by the Holy Spirit. Lets look at some answered questions on how the Holy Spirit works.
When Jesus leaves, will we be orphans?
Jesus was leaving His disciples to go back to God, His Father, in heaven. The disciples were scared and felt abandoned (John 14:1-11). They did not want Jesus to go, but He told them that He had to go or the Holy Spirit would not come (John 16:7). Jesus promised them that He would ask the Father to send them another Helper, who would stay with them and be in them forever. He also said, ‘I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you’ (John 14:15-18). We have a Helper who is always with us. Who is this Helper, you may ask? It is The Holy Spirit, He is our Helper, our Comforter!
How Can I Have This Comforter?
Jesus asked us to do something first before asking the Father to send the Holy Spirit. He asked us to keep His commandments, if we love Him (John 14:15). When you keep Jesus’ commandments because of your love for Him, the Holy Spirit will be with you and in you. To love Jesus is to willingly and joyfully do whatever He commands, and His commands are not burdensome (1 John 5:3). When Jesus speaks, He speaks only what God tells Him (John 14:24b), and the Holy Spirit will hear and tells us what is said (John 16:13-15).
We need to be obedient to God and keep His commandments. If we love Jesus, then listen to the Holy Spirit, our Comforter. Be guided by what He tells us. We will be safe and secure; no matter what circumstances we face!
How Do I know The Comforter Is In Me?
Jesus will always do what He promises, if you trust and obey Him. The question is, do you have enough faith to believe Jesus? Jesus said that the world will not be able to see or know the Spirit of Truth, but you will know Him because He ‘dwells with you and will be in you’ (John 14:17). If you truly love Jesus, you will hear the gentle voice of the Holy Spirit guiding you into all truth (John 16:13). Not only that, but God the Father and Jesus will love you, live in you, and manifest themselves to you (John 14:19-24).
According to Romans 8:9-10, the Spirit of Christ is in us if we believe. Therefore, as Christians, we know the Comforter is in us. We are sealed with the Holy Spirit (our Comforter!) Ephesians 1:13. Isn’t it wonderful to know we are covered and sealed by our Comforter, sent to us by Jesus!! No more Blankets, Just The Comforter!
... but be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, giving thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ
Ephesians 5:18-20 NKJV
How Does The Comforter Guide Me?
In addition to telling you what God says about Jesus (John 15:26) and guiding you into all truths (John 16:13), the Holy Spirit convicts the world of sin, righteousness, and judgement (John 16:8). You will hear that still voice, (some may call conscience) that people try to reject when they plan and/or do something they know is bad (James 1:14-15). Listen to the still voice of the Holy Spirit!
There are times when you are going along your daily routine and somehow things change. You later realize that change from your daily routine was a blessing! You don’t know why you changed your daily routine, it was totally unexpected. The Holy Spirit guided your path into an unexpected blessing. The thing to realize is that, no matter what happens, rely on the Comforter’s still voice and guidance.
There are times when you stumble but the Holy Spirit’s convicting work, which is part of His job, will pick you up again. What is happening when the Holy Spirit is convicting not only us but the whole world?
What Else Does the Comforter Do For Me?
Not only is the Comforter this guiding, gentle presence, speaking to us in our lives but it also has a role to play in convicting not only us but the whole world. The role of the Holy Spirit is to convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8).
When you do something bad, the Holy Spirit is the only one in the whole world who can go into a sinner’s heart and make them feel bad. There will be those who will accept or reject the Holy Spirit’s convicting work in the world (John 16:9). We hope that everyone who believes in Jesus and receives the Holy Spirit will not reject the work of the Holy Spirit in them.
When you say and do what you think is right, and it is not the Word of God, you have made yourself more righteous than God. The only righteous person in this world is the Holy Spirit who gets His commands from God, the Father, through Jesus. Whatever you say and whatever you do, must be based on the Word of God (John 16:10). That’s the only truth.
If you continue living in sin, when Jesus comes back, He won’t be coming back as baby Jesus but as judge. The Holy Spirit will continue His work in convicting you to do the right thing, even when you stubbornly continue doing wrong. Jesus has already meted out judgement against the devil (John 16:11). As a sinner, you are a follower of the devil and you will be judged by Jesus when He comes back (John 8:44). Listen to the Holy Spirit! No more blankets, Just the Comforter!
Summary
When Jesus prayed in the garden before His crucifixion, He did not pray just for Himself and His disciples. Jesus also prayed for those who would come to know Him through the message delivered by the disciples for all generations to come! You are brought into the fold when you believe in Jesus!
When Jesus returned to Heaven, He sent us the Holy Spirit, our Comforter! He is here to guide us, comfort us, speak to us, convict us of sin, righteousness and judgement. With the Comforter living in us, we will experience the Fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23 ) Let us listen to His still voice walk in step with the Holy Spirit as we go about our daily lives (Galatians 5:25). No more blankets, Just the Comforter! We have a Comforter that is better than any blanket! Praise God!
I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one: I in them, and You in Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me.
John 17:20-23 NKJV
