3. What Happens When We Eat God’s Word

Whenever you read, hear, see and obey God’s Word, you should diligently memorize and practice doing it, so that God’s Word can be stored in your heart! Do this often to fill your heart with things from His Word. When your heart is full of good things because of obeying God’s Word, you will find that every time you open your mouth to say something, good things come out!

Luke 6:45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

We Have An Advocate

There are times, however, that dirt and filth from the devil will try to contaminate everywhere inside of you, including your heart. Therefore, you may say something that is sinful, and this happens to the best of us. Do not worry! Repent and remember that the Word of God says that we have an advocate with the Father. Who is this advocate you may ask?  His name is Jesus!

1 John 2:1 My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

 

Please take note of this awesome Scripture reference on “the Word” in John 1:1-14

John 1:1-14, tells us that “in the beginning was the Word, the Word was with God, the Word was God” and later in verse 14, we are told that the “Word put on flesh, and came down to live among us”.

 

The Word is Jesus, and He only speaks what He hears the Father says. Jesus says that  if you love Him, He and the Father will come and live with you!

 

John 14:22 Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, “But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world? 23 Jesus replied, Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them”.

Cleansing Through God's Word

When God’s Word enters your body and finds it fertile or habitable, you become cleansed! God’s Word is alive and powerful, like a very sharp weapon that is able to destroy anything in the tiniest of places! He knows your thoughts and attitudes, and you will never be able to hide anything including yourself from the Word of God. Finally, every thought, word or deed from you will be revealed, and you will be made to explain yourself to Him. This is total cleansing for the child of God who, while still in the world, knows there is hope for eternal life with the loving father!

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

Abundant Living

Let us look at a Scripture under the old covenant that talks about abundant living for eternity, while still in the world. In the Scripture below, Joshua’s heart is filled with God’s Word (in this case, the Torah), so that he won’t forget and he only speaks God’s Word. God tells Joshua to meditate on His Word day and night, so that he can check and make sure that he is doing what the Word says. God promises Joshua that he will become prosperous and have good success.

Joshua 1:8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.

 

If we were to summarize this series on “Eating His Word”, the Scripture below would be my choice because it shows God and His Son, Jesus, making their home in those of us who put our faith in Jesus. We are told that God is strengthening us with power through His Spirit in our inner being (our spirit), so that Jesus can live in our hearts through our faith in Him. God wants us to have enough power to be able to grasp how much we are loved, and that He will do more than we could ever ask or imagine, based on the power at work in us.

 

We are promised eternal life, if we do not feed on bread alone, but feed “on every word that comes out of the mouth of God”. Let us learn to eat His Word for our enjoyment and for His glory!

 

Ephesians 3:14 For this reason I kneel before the Father, 15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name. 16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
